My Writing Processes Blog Tour

Margot Finke tagged me to join the "My Writing Processes Blog Tour." Each week, authors post answers to four Writing Process questions, then tag friends to play along the following week. Read Margot's post, and learn what she's working on here.

What am I working on?

I just received a sneak peek at the cover of a new book from Guardian Angel Publishing coming soon called "Miss Emma Ant." Emma is the head designer of the ant hills, but some of the other ants are jealous, thinking they can do a better job. Jack Foster is illustrating and with the fun text and his funny illustrations, I think it will make children laugh and help them to see that everyone has gifts and talents unique to them.

Jack and I have also completed another book soon to be released on Kindle. And of course, I always have a few others simmering on the stove.

On the grownup writing front, I'm finishing up a novella - something different and challenging, but I love it.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I write across multiple genres. I've written adult fiction, non-fiction, and for children. I've also written workshops, songs, and many magazine articles and reviews. both print and online.

Why do I write what I do?

I write picture books because I'm four years old inside. I love to go back to a simpler time and see the world through a child's eyes.

How does my writing process work?

I usually see the end of a story, then a path to get there. The beginning is the last to get written. I'm left-handed so maybe that explains why I seem to work in a backward manner!

WHO'S UP NEXT MONDAY?

JENNIFER GLADDEN: Jennifer is a children’s author, mother of three, and a teacher who lives and writes in Pennsylvania. She is the author of three children’s books: A Star in the Night, Teresa’s Shadow, and Angel Donor through Guardian Angel Publishing. She also has written several children’s stories, poems and articles, and started her own Catholic e-zine titled My Light Magazine. Blog: http://www.jgladen.blogspot.com/

A Star in the Night by Jennifer Gladen, illustrations by K.C. Snider

"A Star in the Night" by Jennifer Gladen is a sweet story about thinking of others during the holidays. The illustrations by K.C. Snider are beautiful. My favorite one has young David with a Nativity and colorful blankets and is so pretty. At Christmas or any time of the year, this book would be a great way to gently help children to look at others in a different light and find ways to share their blessings.

Bounding For Books Blog Tour - Jennifer Gladen

Another fun stop on the Bounding for Books Blog Tour, this time with Jennifer Gladen, author of A Star in the Night (Guardian Angel Publishing).

About the book:

David makes his way home one Christmas Eve night and sees this is no ordinary night. Accompanied by a shimmering star and some tough decisions, David encounters three experiences that will change his view of Christmas forever.

I posed my three questions to Jennifer:

#1. Children's writers seem to have a knack for thinking like a child. What were you like as a five-year-old?

I loved to write and draw - even as young as five. I wrote silly poems to my teachers and illustrated them as well. I was better at writing than illustrating. I can't remember too much of when I was at that age, but one memory sticks out. I had very curly hair, which I didn't like very much. After a shower one night I stood in front of my mirror for the longest time trying to "brush out" my curls. I was convinced if I stood there long enough I could make them disappear.

#2. What inspired you to write your book.

A Star in the Night is a direct result of the kindness shown to me and my family during difficult times. We have three children, two of them chronically ill. Our community always was there to help us, whether is was for babysitting, food, gas money, you name it. The main character David is a result of the love and support of our community.

#3. Share the best feedback from a child you've received for your writing.

The best feedback I've gotten so far was about my story published in Stories for Children last year titled Mrs. Martin's Marigolds. A wonderful librarian used the story in a lesson and asked the children what they learned. There were many clever responses and life lessons. I was in awe of how much children can get out of just one story.

Thank you SO much for allowing me to shine the light on A Star in the Night, Jennifer!
